Hinterstein carriage museum

The carriage museum of Hinterstein is very close to Bad Hindelang - not far from the town of Hinterstein.

On the outside, the museum is an insignificant wooden barn. Yet, outdoors, various artistic objects, wind chimes and other sound-emitting works of art will surprise you, as will an artificial grotto illuminated by countless candles. Various sledges and carriages are displayed.

The objects are decorated with different preserved animals like wolf, fox, bear and horse. The carriage museum of Hinterstein is open every day, admission free (state: August 2006).

Get enchanted by a unique atmosphere - a most appealing event, especially for children .

Museum of local history
… in the Upper Mill (Obere Mühle) in the Bad Oberdorf district.

The historical hammer mills …

… at the Ostrach are also worth seeing.
When the Counts of Montfort had received the regal for mining in the early 16th century, they opened several ore mines in the Hinterstein valley, in the modern municipal area of Bad Hindelang.

The smelting works between Hinterstein and Bad Oberdorf refined the extracted ore. A substantial arms industry developed:
Recordings from Innsbruck demonstrate that, e. g., almost 20,000 lansquenet lances were delivered by Hindelang's arms makers for the armies of emperor Maximilian in 1520 - 1524.

More peaceful tools are produced here today, among other things, the popular wrought-iron frying pans.

Cattle trailing and sorting in Bad Hindelang

Every year on 11 September, Bad Hindelang organises the traditional cattle trailing and sorting (Viehscheid). If 11 September is a Sunday, the event is moved to the previous Saturday, 10 September.

About 1000 cattle from 6 alps are returned by their herders to their owners. A big mongers' market is attached, including a festival tent, sales booths and more.

A tradition of Bad Hindelang that you should not miss.
